Making a great control panel isn’t too hard given a little guidance… and a few really nice components that will really make the difference to its look… and its ease of assembly.

Structure: I used MDF (Also called Customwood). 5mm for the fascia, 12mm elsewhere. Be creative with your panels design—they don’t all have to look flat and boring as the above example shows!

How was it built?

The detail for the panel above was created by first laying out the artwork on a simple computer drawing programme and printing it out. (I used adobe page maker, but Corel Draw, photo shop, paint and many others can do it—even excel and word have drawing tools!)

After printing, the pages were first laminated then cut carefully to size.

The laminated paper panels were then laid on a good cutting surface (I used a modeling mat) and the holes were punched to an appropriate size with a set of low cost hole punches ($AUD3 from the hardware store).

I then laid the punched panels on the MDF panel they would be stuck to, and when in the right position, I drew around the pane holes, followed by drilling the 5mm MDF with a 3mm drill.

Once that was done and the paint well and truly dry, I stuck the laminated paper panel to the painted MDF with 3M’s permanent adhesive spray glue. From there on, it is simply a matter of inserting the parts and completing the wiring!
