Coloured LED Selection

This signal uses  3mm T-1 type LEDs for the main signal head and 0603 surface mount LEDs for the indicators. This brass scratch-built signal is an example of the many superb signals built by Tony Sissons for “Widnes Vine yard”, which is just one of the Wirral Finescale modellers several superbly detailed and constructed layouts.

(This comprehensive range includes both single and dual colour common + LEDs in a variety of sizes and types)

 

Our single colour LEDs are packaged in tens. Our two colour, 3 lead common positive LEDs are sold in packs of six.

Both types are complete with basic LED instructions and 1,000 ohm resistors.(1,000 ohms is LED safe for all commonly used Model railway operating voltages)

If you want to calculate your own resistor values using ohms law, the forward voltage on a red or yellow LED is approximately 1.5 volts, and a green LED closer to 2 volts. Blue is about 2.5 volts, white appx 3.2 volts.

Current draw can be estimated at anywhere between 5mA (colours) and 15mA (White/Blues) for loading & resistor calculation for model railway use. They do of course vary but these figures are always “safe” to work to.

5mm T1 type Coloured LEDs

2mm Tower type Coloured LEDs

Text Box: This is an extremely versatile LED that is very commonly used in model railways. 2mm tower is most often used for twin lights, inset lights and markers. It is ideal as a basis for light clusters (wipac type) often used on loco’s. sold in packs of 10, with 1000ohm resistors. 2mm scales to appx * 12” in N * 6” in OO * 7” in HO * 3.5” in O scale (We are often asked, so yes, packs of 100 are also available to special order)

1.8 mm Micro Panel Dot Coloured LEDs

Text Box: This is a great little LED that is very flexible—it can be used as a marker or headlight, and fits most N scale loco’s without any stress on space. It is a really good choice as a steam era or tail end lamp for Australian, UK and many EU models too. We use these for interior coach lights too, as they can be “trimmed” with the right resistor to accurately portray early gas or oil lamps as well as more modern low voltage incandescent and give your coaches a really excellent truly realistic night time look! 1.8mm scales to appx * 10” in N * 5” in OO * 6” in HO * 3” in O scale It is available in Prototype white (shown) and also in pure white (sunny). 1.6 mm Mini Gull Wing Coloured LEDs

 

Text Box: smaller than our microdot & only fractionally larger in practical terms than the DCCconcepts surface mount LED that is loved for its ability to light anything anywhere ,this new LED is perfect for N scale colour light signals & HO and 4mm scale semaphore signal lamps,. It is also remarkably close in size to late steam era (UK) buffer beam electric lamps (in fact a similar LED type is actually sold by a UK supplier as a lamp - but at the horrendous price of at GBP3 each!) Its uses go well beyond that though—ditch lights, step lights, table lamps, footplate lamps… the list is endless. The convenient butterfly leads make connection easy, and each LED has a very clear polarity mark on the rear surface. 1.6mm scales to appx * 9” in N * 4.5” in OO * 5” in HO * 2.5” in O It is available in red, green and yellow, as well as lunar and prototype white (We are often asked, so yes, packs of 100 are also available to special order)
