Back to back wheel gauges

Track Gauges & Track making Tools

Back-to-back Gauges: Most running problems with ready-to-run locomotives and rolling stock can be traced to a simple cause - careless manufacture which placed the wheels either too close together or too far apart on the axle.

This is easily remedied once you have the appropriate gauge to help you with a consistent result, and it will be easier still with gauges from DCCconcepts as not only are they made to very tight tolerances from the highest quality polished Brass, but we added a convenient handle to make it easier to hold the gauge whilst checking your wheels!

Track gauges: Building your own track and turnouts is far easier than you may think. Many like to make it sound like a real “hair shirt” process however if you have some basic tools and modelling skills, and ar prepared to take the time to teach yourself and practice a little, that is simply not the case!

Even in the “finer scale” area, the issue isn’t measuring or placing parts to within a few thousands of an inch, its simply a matter of using a template to guide you and using the correct gauges at the appropriate place and time ...and fixing the rails in place… so if you have the correct tools for the job you CAN become a “builder of track” in no time at all!

Our DCCconcepts gauges are made to fine tolerances from polished brass (others use steel, which quickly rusts when around soldering and fluxes).

We use them ourselves so we know you will really appreciate the fact we’ve made them easier to use by adding a removable handle too!

Track making tools: Whilst most things can be done with simple tools, there is no doubt that a couple of specialised tools will make the job easier for you. Our frog and turnout blade filing tools are made from hardened steel so if you can, if you wish, use power tools to form the blade without risking damage to the tool.

Back-to-back Gauges

Text Box: Made by one of the finest toolmakers in Australia, these precision gauges are created from a high grade hard brass for a long life and ease of maintenance.
We use this sort of gauge often so made what we see as an improvement to the traditional “L shape gauge sold by many, and simply made by milling steel Angle - We used high quality hard brass and milled out a section to accommodate axles and wheel bushes, then, because we really do know how easy they are to drop we also did what we see as the obvious thing (Which no other maker has bothered to do) and added a brass handle as well, making them a delight to use. Sold singly with handle.
ALL our gauges are guaranteed to be on or within 0.02 of specification

DCCconcepts improved Roller Gauges.

Text Box: A project that saw us creating more than 100 hand-made turnouts led to frustration with available roller gauges. Their design made it hard to get as close to the common crossing tip (frog) of the turnout as we’d have liked for perfect accuracy… So, we redesigned them.
Small changes made a big difference. We removed the outer flange from one of the two gauges in each pack, ensuring that the gauge can be used right to the tip of the frog, guaranteeing accurate wing rail placement. We added a removable threaded handle to make them easier to hold in place where needed for critical parts of the turnout and made it easily removable for when you want to “roll” your roller gauges… Most importantly, instead of using mild steel, we made them from a high quality hard brass. Harder than mild steel and they not only look good… they will not corrode, ever!
All roller gauges are sold in a pack of two with a convenient Handle

DCCconcepts Track filing Jigs.

Text Box: Again we have reviewed products available and adapted them to our needs.
These filing jigs are similar to those which have been sold for a while in UK however layouts outside UK are often larger and really do need many more turnouts, so when we do it ourselves, we tend to use power tools for the filing.
To accommodate this, we have made these jigs from hardened steel so that wear is minimal and if wanted, a disc sander can be used rather than a hand file.
How do we adapt our disc sander? Well, its easy. All you need to do is fit an appropriately fine metal cutting paper to the disc and install a new face to the table which touches the paper—we use Masonite or hardboard, fixing it with some contact adhesive—to be certain it fits close to the disc, we put it in place when the contact glue is relatively fresh, and pushing it right to the disc while it is spinning, guaranteeing a total interference fit.
Using the sander (Ours is a low cost Ryobi) we can sand a set of parts for a common crossing in seconds (with either steel of Nickel silver rail)!
