Even more… Specialised Modeling Tools
We’ve already covered many of our tools on other specialised pages but there are more still to come. Each will work for you at least as well as we claim… and like our pliers and other tools, all have been chosen because we use them in our own modelling or are exceptional in either quality or performance.
High Quality File Set This excellent quality file set is exceedingly sharp and perfect for brass, nickel silver, plastic or any other modelling material. The quality of the files is excellent and the handles are very comfortable indeed. Cutting tools like files need looking after properly so this set is supplied in a convenient storage case which will prevent them being damaged by rubbing against each other. Really good value!
Super tough Tungsten carbide scriber A high quality scriber is a tool with many purposes, and this one is excellent. Lie all high quality tools, it will last almost forever if looked after, so do replace the protective tip cover when not in use (Its also safer that way… it IS very sharp! It will: Cut glass (We use it to cut microscope glass to size for windows) Scribe anything… plastic, copper, brass, nickel silver or steel Act as a centre-point marker for fine drills Act as a marker for centre drilling loco marker lamps in diesel bodies The list is endless…. Shaped like a standard pencil it is nice to hold and a precision tool every modeller should have on his or her bench.
DCCconcepts Ultra-sharp Track Cutters. Getting the track right is as important as it gets so we specified these cutters to be the best ever made. Comfortable grips and high quality construction are a given but the key is the quality of the blade material and its preparation and hardening. We were given a simple choice here: make them the same as the others out there, or give them an edge that will guarantee a perfect clean cut in rail every time by taking the hardening process one step further. We took that extra step and we’re glad we did! These cutters are a joy to use, and cut so neatly and cleanly that filing simply isn’t needed most of the time. We sell them with a one year guarantee against chipping or fracture. Keep them exclusively for cutting rail, and they’ll last forever!
The Incredible “Cruciform” Tungsten sharpener I used to NEVER sharpen a modelling blade, and to be honest I was also quite reluctant to sharpen the carving knife except at Christmas when I really and no choice… I just wasn’t very good at it, so would just buy new scalpel, razor and X-Acto type blades as often as I needed to change them...! This really effective tool has changed all that. It will sharpen a modelling blade to an edge as good as a new one with just a couple of passes, and it can of course also sharpen any other type of blade knife (including hard to sharpen stay-sharp types), any type of scissors or even the lathe and router bits! Its no exaggeration to say that there is almost nothing it can’t make sharper - We have a client who even uses it to add a good edge to lathe tools! A good friend was asked to try one for me and his telephone call the following day summed it up perfectly. “I could now cleanly cut my throat with every single blade in the house”. No… we don’t think that’s a very good idea, but it DOES say a lot about the effectiveness of this tool! DCCconcepts Tungsten carbide sharpener
Quality Titanium coated Twist Drill set (20x Metric) Small drills find many uses, but are almost impossible to buy locally for most modellers. When they ARE available, they are often a silly price too! This set is of very high quality and as shown in the picture, contains 20 drills in fine steps between 0.3mm and 1.6mm. They are supplied in a self indexing dispenser box so you will always have the right drill in the right place when you need it.
Quality Titanium coated Twist Drill “Pro Packs” When you do a lot of scratch-building and kit-building, there are a few sizes of micro drill that get used all the time, and inevitably, these are the drills which are broken first! We have therefore created this exceptional value pack for the more active modeller…. 10 each of the three most commonly used sizes, available either as 10 of one size or in a value pack of 30. These drills are hard to store and easy to lose, so we have packed each size in its own plastic storage vial.
Super value Drill Combo Pack If you are a mail order client or just use lots of drills, it may be easier to put some extra of the commonly broken sizes into stock on the workbench right now…. To acknowledge the fact that you buy them together, we have packaged both the set of 20 varying sizes and the DCT-357 pack into one value packed buy for you. 20 assorted drills…. PLUS 10x 0.3mm PLUS 10x 0.5mm PLUS 10x 0.7mm
Fibreglass Brushes (1) “The Mother of all fibreglass brushes” At 190mm long x 25mm diameter this is truly the biggest we’ve seen. We were a little skeptical when we found it but having used it to clean entire frets of brass parts and entire PCB surfaces in a few moments we are sold on it—if you do a lot of modelling in metal or love electronics assembly you will love this!
(2) “Refillable pen type fibreglass brush” This pen has a retracting replaceable fibreglass brush that is perfect for cleaning rail, brass or other modelling metals, circuit boards or anything at all that needs to be clean for soldering. (Also great for wheel cleaning to improve the running qualities of locomotives!) (sorry about the poor image)
Liquid Lead Yes… we think of it as a “tool” to get weight where its needed to assist pickup, hauling power and track-holding! This is a great product: Each bag contains 500 grammes (over 1 pound) of fine genuine lead weight. It can be poured into larger cavities and sealed in place with glue or mixed with glue and spooned into smaller places to add weight almost anywhere—even between the underframe ribs on a flat wagon!
